אבלאית - נְאֲקדִוּם nāqidum , מופיע בכתב- na-gi-du-um [1] בהוראת ראש עדרים.
בכתבי אוגרית - נמצאה המילה 𐎐𐎖𐎄 nqd במשמעות: אדם שאחראי על כמה רועים או מנהל של כמה רועים. אפשר לפיכך להניח שגם במקרא המילה "נוקד" אינה מתייחסת לרועה סתם, אלא לבעל תפקיד בכיר שאחראי על ניהול כמה רועים וכמה עדרים[2].
